Okazaki, February 2022The municipality of Saint-Jacques (4,290 inhabitants in 2020; 6,726 ha) is
located 60 km north of Montreal. The municipality was established on 4 February
1998 by the merging of the former municipalities of the village and of the
parish of Saint-Jacques, reforming the original municipality that had been split
in 1912.
Saint-Jacques was established in 1774 by some 30 Acadian
households coming from Boston, in a territory known since 1772 as Nouvelle
Acadie. The parish of Saint-Jacques, established like many other in the region
by the Sulpicians, was named as a tribute to priest Jacques Degeay (1717-1774),
who had warmly welcomed the newcomers.

The arms are "Quarterly, 1. Or three scallops, 2. Gules a chalice or
surmounted by a host argent, 3. Azure a nave argent a star or in canton
sinister, 4. Or a tobacco plant proper on a base sable."
Or is a symbol
of people's honesty and generosity. The scallops are the attributes of the
town's patron saint, St. James.
Gules is a symbol of St. James' particular
dedication to God. The Eucharist recalls the specific devotion of Acadians
The church and the star represents Acadia and its anthem, "Ave Maris Stella".
Tobacco cultivation was established in 1875 in Saint-Jacques, one of Canada's
earliest center of cultivation. Or represents the income provided by tobacco
industry.
