The Town of L'Épiphanie (8,920 inhabitants in 2020; 5,817 ha) is located 50
km north of Montreal. The Town was established on 23 May 2018 as the merger of
the former Town and Parishes of L'Épiphanie, reuniting the municipality split in
1921. The Village of L'Épiphanie was elevated a Town in 1967.
L'Épiphanie
was established in 1853 as parish part of the vast domain of Achigan, which had
been founded in 1732 by the Sulpicians. The name of the parish was coined by
Ignace Bourget (1799-1885), Bishop of Montreal from 1840 to 1876, "recalling"
that the Sulpicians perceived tax on Three Kings' Day. The first church and
presbytery were built in 1857, initiating the parish's social organization.
L'Épiphanie boomed in the 19th century with the development of railway. The
lines exploited by the Grand Nord (subsequently, Canadian National) and the
North Shore (Subs., Canadian Pacific) railway companies crossed in the town.
Every Sunday evening, the villagers used to go to the station to greet the
commuting passengers.

The star was chosen as a reference to the town's arms, motto
(Latin, "Vidimus Stellam", "We Saw a Star"), and name. It is also a
symbol of light and duration, which indicates the way ahead.
The star's
eight branches refer to the universal symbolic of cosmic balance associated with
number eight. For Christian, number seven refers to the Old Testament, while
number eight refers to the New Testament. Number eight announces beatitude of
the future century, the future eternal era, and therefore alludes to the town's
name.
The graphic design both fills and aerate the space, and plays with
transparency and compactness. Firmly anchored in reality, the star is not
closed. The composing lines, drawn with a broadening effect, conveys an
ascending, dynamic soaring movement.
In compliance with tradition, the
star shall be yellow on a white or blue background. It should be used alone as
self-standing, or as a simple complement to the town's name
On the arms,
the star recalls the Bethlehem star and the Sulpicians.
