Based on information from the Anchorage Times editions of the time: The flag of Skagway before becoming a borough in 2007 was designed by taxi driver Margie Anton. The flag depicts, on a field of bright blue, a circular device which has a miner's shovel and pick behind it. The device is a representation of a miner's pan, which depicts the Chilkoot Pass, railroad, a freight ship, and a miner; all as historical elements. In its center, SKAGWAY is read above; ALASKA below. 48 stars are seen in 2 rows, with there being a central star that indicates Alaska as the 49th state. Over the star is also the number 49. Some gold nuggets are also seen on this design. Information based on the Anchorage Times.
