The national flag of Syria defaced with a facial image of Pres. Bashar
al-Assad is seen at
https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2013/09 being waved by a pro-Assad
supporter in front of the "White House" (where the U.S. president resides) in
Washington, DC, on Sept. 9, 2013. At the fly end of this flag on the middle
white line are the Arabic words: "Allah Akbar" ["Allah is the greatest (god)"],
and on the right hoist side is probably his name (I believe "al-Assad" ( الأسد )
is at the bottom and possibly "President" above it).

A pro-Assad flag: The national flag of Syria with a facial portrait of Pres.
Bashar al-Assad, and on the bottom black line in white Arabic lettering is
(reading from right-to-left) : "min hobbek". "Al-Hob" in Arabic means "love".
So, the meaning on this flag is: "Because of your love."

Following the take-over of Damascus by the opposition forces, the old green-white-black flag was widely seen in support of the overthrow.

Furthermore, during the ongoing
civil war, the Syrian opposition, represented by the Syrian National
Council, then by the National Coalition for Syrian
Revolutionary and Opposition Forces (commonly named the Syrian National
Coalition), used a modified version of the independence flag first used in
1932 with a 2:3 aspect ratio. The modified
independence flag began to be used as a universal display of the protesting
opposition in late 2011 (source:

The opposition wanted to distinguish themselves from the current Syrian
government and favoured the use of the flag used when Syria gained its
independence from France. Khaled Kamal, an official from the Syrian National
Council, now believes this flag to also represent independence and the end of
Bashar al-Assad's government. Today the flag is mainly used in areas controlled
by the Syrian National Coalition. The use of the modified independence flag is
similar to the Libyan rebels' use of the pre-Gaddafi red-black-green-white
Libyan flag from the era of the Kingdom of Libya in
opposition to Muammar Gaddafi's green flag. The original 1:2 aspect ratio flag
has been used by the opposition unofficially on several occasions |
