The municipality of Saint-Pierre (5,194 inhabitants on 2,500 ha) is the capital of Saint Pierre and Miquelon.
The commune is made up of the island of Saint Pierre proper and
several nearby smaller islands, such as Île-aux-Marins.
Main sites in Saint-Pierre:
- The Chapel of Notre-Dame-des-Marins was designated a historical
monument in 2011.
- The original Saint-Pierre Cathedral was destroyed by fire in 1902.
It was rebuilt between 1905 and 1907 in the style of Basque churches.
The bell tower was reconstructed in 1975 using sandstone from Alsace
and local rhyolite. Some of the stained-glass windows were donated by
General de Gaulle. The building was designated a historical monument
in 2020.
- Pointe aux Canons is the site of a former fort that defended the
island from 1690 to 1713.
- Saint-Pierre has an arena for the traditional Basque sport of
pelota, Fronton Zazpiak Bat, named after the heraldic nickname for the
Basque coat of arms.
