The council informed me they do not use a municipal flag.

Coat of Arms

image from the Municipal Council

The council informed me the coat of arms of Tonalá was adopted around 1986, being adopted during the term of Municipal President Apolinar Sancho Toledo (1986-1988). I was also informed the designer and process of adoption is unknown. Under the shield, a rectangle with curves on all sides reads a motto and its name: "TONALA TIERRA DE SOL" [Tonala, Land of Sun]. Under this are shapes of tongues. The shield depicts a seal of the god Tláloc at the top, found in the community of Paredón in the 1980's. The background depicts the sky and a field from which the Tres Picos Hill emerges. At the bottom, its coast is depicted, as it borders the Pacific Ocean. To the middle-left, train tracks and a train over it are seen, signifying its railroad industry. The middle-right depicts a profile view of a cow head, symbol of cattle-raising. At the bottom-left, a fish is seen for its fishing industry; in the lower-right, a shrimp is seen for the same. Each of these elements are divided into their own quadrant by two ribbons tied together.
