Located in Kyoto City Kyoto Prefecture and established in 1922.
The embroidered ceremonial flag has maroon background with a gold emblem and vertically written gold kanji university name in gold fringe.
The university flag has purple background with a white emblem.
The name of the university is derived from "Ryukoku," the name of the Honganji temple. The university emblem is a combination of the three treasures, a symbol of Buddhism, and the abbreviated chrysanthemum emblem ,the emblem of Honganji Temple, i.e., the image of three treasures represents the three treasures of Buddha, Dharma, and monks, and is part of the abbreviated octagonal chrysanthemum emblem.
