In demonstrations held in London yesterday to protest against the British Government's proposal to ban hunting with dogs, several versions of a 'Green' union jack were seen. I saw one with a base color of emerald green, with a spruce green St George's Cross and St Andrew's saltire, with an emerald green St Patrick's cross set off with a spruce green fimbriation; this was the most common version which I saw. I also saw the standard union jack, but with a bright green St George cross and only one saltire, also in that color. There were several other flags which I saw in the background, one a green St George cross on a white field, and the other the same design except that the colors were reversed.

Other "green flags"

I understand that the union jack in varying shades of green is allegedly that of the Countryside Alliance, a pro-hunting movement, while the union jack with cross and saltire in green is that of the Real Countryside Alliance, a more activist breakaway group.

I am not sure we can firmly associate these flags with the Countryside Alliance. I searched their web site, looking for examples of these flag designs and they do not appear anywhere in the public areas of their site. Indeed, their colour scheme is quite different and they sell a range of merchandise bearing their logo. It may well be that these flags are associated with a particular grouping, which also happened to be attending the demonstration, but not the Countryside Alliance itself.
