Presentation of Ses Salinas

The municipality of Ses Salines (Spanish, Salínas; 4,860 inhabitants in 2017, 3,912 ha; municipal website) is located on the southern shore of Majorca, 50 km south-east of Palma de Mallorca.
The municipality is made of the village of Ses Salines (2,121 inh.) and of the coastal resort of Colònia de Sant Jordi (2,381 inh.).

Ses Salines was already settled in the Age of Bronze, as evidenced by megalithic monuments (9th century BP). The salterns (salines) of Sa Vall and Colònia de Sant Jordi, the second oldest in the world (4th century BC), were continuously exploited by the Romans, the Byzantines, the Moors and the Christians.
Once a Muslim estate, Ses Salines was incorporated in 1230 to the Catalan-Aragonese kingdom by James I.

Flag of Ses Salinas

The flag of Ses Salinas (photo), as seen in May 2009 at the Town Hall, is yellow with with four red horizontal stripes and the local municipal of arms in its centre.
The Royal Academy of History recalls that the municipality is named for very old salterns (Catalan, salines). The arms, which appear to have been used in old coats of arms, required official approval. The proposed design, however, is not recommendable, since the salterns look rather like a broken window, without any heraldic style.
A coat of arms more compliant with the rules of heraldry and equally symbolic would be "Azure a salt heap argent. The shield surmounted by a Royal crown closed".
