Jaramijó canton (c. 18,000 inhabitants; 9,680 ha) is located in the west of
Manabí province. The Jaramijó Naval Base, located east of the town of Jaramijó,
covered nearly 50% of the canton's territory.
The canton was established on
28 April 1998.
The battle of Balsamaragua was fought on 6 December 1884.
At the time, several insurrections had broken in the country, led by Carlos
Concha (1864-1919) in Esmeraldas, Nicolás Infante Díaz (1847-1885) in Los Ríos,
and General Eloy Alfaro (1842-1912 in Manabí. The "Old Warrior" Alfaro came from
Panamá on the ship "Alajuela", which he had equipped for war. The government
expected to capture in deep-sea the "Alajuela", which had taken shelter in the
Caráquez Bay. Early in the morning, the "Alajuela" left the bay at low tide,
rushed on the government's boat and repelled it. On her way to Manta, the
"Alajuela" was intercepted Jaramijó by a second governmental boat; defeated,
Alfaro ordered to burn the ship rather than delivering it to the enemy. Eloy
Alfaro subsequently served two terms as the President of Ecuador (1895-1901 and
1906-1911).

The flag of Jaramijó is tricolor. The white stripe, covering half the flag,
represents peace, union and friendship of all inhabitants. The blue stripe
placed in the center represents the sky and the sea that baths the coast. The
third stripe, red, represents the valiance, decision and heroism of the man that
goes on the sea in search of daily food and several times ends as an inert body
on the bottom of the ocean. Red also means the blood shed in the battle of
Balsamaragua.
