The municipality of Saint-Tharcisius (510 inhabitants in 2008; 7,961 ha) is
located in Matapédia Regional County Municipality, Region Bas-Saint-Laurent.
Saint-Tharcisius was settled in 1912, and erected as a mission in 1922, a
parish in 1926, and a municipality in October 1926. The municipality is named
for St. Tarcisius, listed as a Christian martyr in an epigram written by Pope
Damasus I at least a century after the event. Tarcisius is there said to have
been beaten to death by a pagan mob rather than deliver to them the Blessed
Sacrament, which he was carrying.

The coat of arms of
Saint-Tharcisius is quartered by a cross, a symbol of Christian faith. The white
disk represents a host, symbolizing the parish's patron saint. The fir
symbolizes forestry while the wheat ear symbolizes agriculture. The French motto
"Foi - Fraternité - Travail" reads "Faith -
Fraternity - Work". The maple
green leaves surrounding the shield symbolize Québec.
