Charlevoix is a cultural and natural region located in Quebec, on the north
shore of the Saint Lawrence River and in the Laurentian Mountains area. The
region was designated a World Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1989.
Administratively, it comprises the Charlevoix and Charlevoix-Est regional county
municipalities, in Capitale-Nationale administrative
region.
The region was named after Pierre François-Xavier de Charlevoix,
a French Jesuit explorer and historian who travelled through the area in the
18th century.

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of its founding, the Charlevoix History
Society created a flag in May 2013. It has been designed by a committee of
members of the Historical Society jointly with the Bix communication group.
The process started in 2012 and aimed to create a symbol of identity and unity
for all the people of Charlevoix, and was inspired by the
Saguenay-Lac-St-Jean which has had its flag since
the 1930s.
The flag is inspired by the "three countries" of Charlevoix as
described by Félix-Antoine Savard (a priest, academic, poet, novelist,
1896-1982, author of "Menaud maître-draveur" (English translation "Boss of the
river"), a key figure in Quebec's national identity and literature):
"De vert
comme la forêt environnant une partie du territoire.
D’or pour la section
terrienne où s’est implantée sa population.
De bleu pour le fleuve
Saint-Laurent longeant toute la côte de la région"
Green for the forest
surrounding part of the territory, gold for the land section where its
population settled, blue for the St. Lawrence River along the coast of the
region.
According to Serge Gauthier, president of the Historical Society, it
is a striped and noble flag, which has nothing to do with a coat of arms. "The
three colors chosen come together in a sign of welcome and openness," he
explains.
