Municipality

The municipality of Pantano Grande (9,895 inhabitants in 2010; 84,761 ha) is located 120 km of Porto Alegre. The municipality is composed of the districts of Pantano Grande (seat), Monte Castelo, Várzea and Aroeiras.
Pantano Grande (Great Swamp) owes its odd name to the muddy clay soil that made the early roads swampy and limited traffic.

The municipality of Pantano Grande was established by State Law No. 8,488 promulgated on 15 December 1987, separating from Rio Pardo.
