The municipality of Umuarama (112,500 inhabitants in 2020; 123,454 ha) is
located 550 km north-west of Curitiba. The municipality is composed of the
districts of Umuarama (seat), Serra dos Dourados established in 1956), Santa
Eliza (est. by State Law No. 5,531 promulgated on 20 February 1967), Lovat (est.
by State Law No. 4,552 promulgated on 10 February 1962), Roberto Silveira (est.
by State Law No. 6,916 promulgated on 2 September 1977), Vila Nova União
(forming a single urban nucleus with the district of Carboneira, located in the
municipality of Maria Helena), and Vila Nova Jerusalém.
Umuarama was
established on 26 June 1955 as part of the municipality of Cruzeiro do Oeste, to
be elevated a municipality by State Law No. 4,245 promulgated on 25 July 1960.
Umuarama is named for a Tupi-Guarani word meaning "a place where fiends met".
The name was first used for a summer camp established by Mackensie College in
Campos de Jordão (São Paulo), and subsequently widely used for hotels, clubs and
cinemas. The name was given to the town by one of its early setters, Raimundo
Durães, after a hotel located on Ribeirão Preto (São Paulo).

The flag of Umuarama is blue with a white-red-white
horizontal stripe in the center and a yellow triangle placed along the hoist,
charged in the center with the municipal coat of arms.

The flag is also used ion a more elongated design and a larger red
stripe.
