Order of Australia Banner

Located in The City of London, in the Church of St Mary-Le-Bow, Cheapside, London EC2 can be found what is termed as 'The Order of Australia Banner'. There is an explanatory plaque below the flag, which reads as follows:

"THE ORDER OF AUSTRALIA was founded by HER MAJESTY QUEEN ELIZABETH II on 14th February 1975 as 'an Australian society of honour for the purpose of according recognition to Australian citizens and other persons for achievement or for meritorious service.'

This Banner depicting the emblem of the Order was provided by The Order of Australia Association and Dedicated by the Rt. Rev. John Klyberg Bishop of Fulham in the presence of HRH The Duke of Kent on 18th September 1990."

Due to the location of the flag in the corner of a square shaped church, it is not possible to accurately measure and it is difficult to accurately photograph it. However, it appears to be in the standard ratio of 1:2 and is dark blue, with what the parish web site describes as "the emblem of the Order of Australia" upon it, centred in the middle of the flag. Note, however, that the emblem on the flag differs slightly from that on the web site of the Order itself, its insignia for the various grades and the web site of the Order of Australia Association. Furthermore, insofar as I am able to establish, none of these sources make reference to the banner.

Photographs of the flag in context may be found at http://www.stmarylebow.co.uk/Australian%20Connections.htm on the Parish of St Mary-Le-Bow web site. [No longer available - ed.]
