Light cones from the lighthouse on Utsira became an important landmark of the
site once it was lit in 1844. It has saved many lives on the sea.

Blazon: I blått et kors dannet ved fire motstøtende sølv spisser. In English:
Azure four piles issuant conjoined in cross argent.
Approved by the royal resolution of 23 July 1982 after a drawing by John
Digernes. [c2j87]
The design is reminding to light flowing out of a lighthouse that was built in
the municipality in 1844. The
municipal web site names the designer as John Digernes. Also date is given as
24.4.82, probably referring to the date he signed the artwork (although further
on the page it is said that he signed the artwork as "John Digernes Haugesund.
21.4.1982")
The municipality wanted to have the lighthouse since 1976, but no design they
tried was approvable. Eventually they hired Digernes in 1980 to prepare a
variant that could get an approval. Since 2004 there are wind power plats
erected in the municipality and the design is also seen to represent those with
three wings and a tower.
