The flag of Akershus represents the silhouette of Akershus castle, built
  under king Hakon V (the same king who was in charge of building Vardøhus -
  the castle represented on the flag of Finnmark).

Akershus, Buskerud and Østfold and three other municipalities were merged 
into Viken on 1 January 2020.

The merger was opposed in all three counties which were to merge
    both before and after the implementation - even the local government
    has made the reversal its main goal. 
As a result, it was decided by
    the national parliament in 2022 that the merger be reversed. On
    2024-01-01, Akershus, Buskerud and Østfold counties were
    re-established and their original arms were readopted; since their
    flags had actually been banners of arms, they were automatically
    readopted as well.
