The new Moss Municipality was created on January 1, 2020 after the merger of the previous Moss Municipality and Rygge Municipality.
The result of the merger is that the name of the municipality is now named
Moss, but the new municipality took over the symbols of the now former Rygge
Municipality.

Blazon: I rødt en gull spore. In English: Gules a spur or, rowel to chief.
(I write rowel to chief, since the usual position of spur in arms, according to
Parker, is with the rowel downwards. cf.
http://karlwilcox.com/parker/?page_id=2827)
Approved by the royal resolution of 30 November 1984 after a drawing by Truls
Nygaard.

The design represents the golden spur found at Rød in Rygge, being one of the
finest golden artefacts from the Viking era found in Norway. The original spur
had a pointed end, but it is shown with a rowel in the arms, to make it more
recognizable to what it is. Also, the rowel wheel is depicted rotated 90° along
the point axis then a wheel would normally be in a spur - for the same reason of
recognisibility (just like the crossbar of an anchor is so depicted regularly,
and other similar kinds of heraldic abstractions). The actual Rygge spur is
shown of a photo at
