The coat of arms was designed in the year 2000, by Prof. Mario Armando Núñez Aragón, according to a source online. To the sides of the shield, two branches carrying fruit are depicted for its fruticulture. Under the shield is a blue ribbon which reads "Ocotepec". Above the shield is a crown topped by a cross for faith which reads "Ku-Bi-Mø'", the Zoque name for the area meaning "place with fences". The border reads "Ocotepec Chiapas" to its sides; at the top "Mezcalapa" indicating its region. In its inner area, a path goes through forests and hills indicating its geography, with the sun rising. The trees and hils are also an allusion to its name, which means "in the hill of ocotes", ocote being a type of pine tree. Under the bridge, a river flows indicating the Tumbac River in its other communities. The Lion of Saint Mark is also depicted, patron saint of the Municipality; the church of San Marcos Evangelista carries his name. In front, ritual instruments of the Zoque natives are seen (drum and flute). Other instruments, the trumpet and violin, also emphasize their importance.
