Eco-Ecole (website), the French branch of the Eco-Schools international program of education for sustainable development, was initiated in 2005 by the Teragir association.
Founded in 1983 and state-approved, Teragir manages another six programs
of education for sustainable development: Young Reporters for the
Environment, Water Explorer, Stockholm Junior Waterprize, Blue Flag,
International Forest Day, and Green Key.
The Eco-Ecole certification, awarded in 2018 to more than 2,500
institutes, is composed of three levels:
- Eco-Ecole, targeting primary schools (écoles);
- Eco-Collège, targeting middle schools (collèges);
- Eco-Lycée, targeting high schools (lycées).
