30.08.2018: The Ministry of Finance and the Public Sector of the Asturian Government publishes this Thursday in the Official Gazette of the Principality of Asturias the resolution approving the heraldic shield and the municipal flag.
The shield, divided into two parts, has in the upper part, on a mountainous background, a row of shepherds armed with sticks to protect the cattle and defend themselves from invaders. In the lower room, also on a mountainous background, the figure of Don Pelayo, with a crown and royal mantle, wielding a sword in his right hand, and in the left the Victoria Cross. All, with a royal crown.
As for the flag, there is currently no reference to the Onís flag, so its creation is based on the shield. That is why the grayish color of the limestone mountains of the Picos de Europa is used. This procedure puts an end to a process that began two years ago, when the Onís City Council, in an ordinary session, approved the proposal for the municipality's coat of arms and flag.
