Flag adopted ca. 1990, according to Dirk Schönberger's Administrative Divisions of the World website. From Ralf Hartemink's International Civic Arms website:
The arms were granted on October 3, 1990. The arms combine elements from the arms of the territories to which the district historically belonged: the lion of the County of Meissen, the arms of the Lords of Sonneberg in the second quarter, in the third quarter the arms of the Counts of Schaumberg-Rauenstein and in the fourth quarter the arms of Saxony.Literature: Linder and Olzog 1996.
