The municipality of São José do Herval (2,568 inhabitants; 10,152 ha)is
located 250 km north of Porto Alegre.
São José do Herval was originally

muleteers heading from Lajeado to Soledade. The settlement was subsequently
renamed for its patron saint, St. Joseph, and mat ("erva-mate") cultivation.
