The municipality of Santo Antônio da Patrulha (42,658 inhabitants in 2017;
104,981 ha) is located 80 km north-east of Porto Alegre. The municipality is
composed of the districts of Santo Antônio da Patrulha (seat), Miraguaia,
Catanduva Grande, Pinheirinhos, Evaristo and Chicolomã.
Santo Antônio da
Patrulha was one of the first four municipalities established in Rio Grande do
Sul in 1809. "Gardens and houses" were settled in 1743 and placed under the
custody of Inácio José de Mendonça e Silva and his wife Margarida Exaltação da
Cruz, who are considered as the town's founders. Administrative and social
organization of the settlement was initiated in 1760 after the inauguration of
the chapel of Santo Antônio da Guarda Velha de Viamão.
The Municipal Chamber
of Santo Antônio da Patrulha was inaugurated on 3 April 1811. The subsequent
division of the original territory through successive emancipation processes
made of Santo Antônio da Patrulha the root of 77 municipalities forming four
"generations".

The flag of Santo Antônio da Patrulha is blue with a broad ascending diagonal
stripe, charged in the center with the municipal coat of arms.
