The municipality of Corbélia (17,117 inhabitants in 2020 ; 52,914 ha) is
located 500 km west of Curitiba.
Corbélia was named for the French word "corbeille",
"a small flower basket". The tradition reports that the name was coined by
florist Iracema Zanato, the wife of Armando Zanatoi, one of the founders of the
town in the 1940s. To recall this, the town's streets are named either for
flowers or the early colonists, while squares are named for their countries of
origin.
The municipality of Corbélia was established by State Law No. 4,382
promulgated on 10 June 1961, separating from Cascavel, and inaugurated on 8
December 1961. Corbélia then experienced a demographic boom, population
increasing from 2,252 in the early 1960s to 39,834 in the early 1970s. Due to
the increase in arable land area, rural population increased from 1,852 to
36,799 during the same period.
