Yacht cubs in the 19th century were often hits and misses. Fortunately,
sometimes these early histories make it into the press of those days. This is
how we know something about yachting in Detroit, as included in The Yachts and
Yachtsmen of America - Henry Mott, 1894.
The Peninsular Yacht Club seems
to have been the first yacht club of Detroit in ca. 1858. It appears to have
been gone by the time of the Unpleasantness. After that, a new club was created,
the International Yacht Club. This lasted until approximately 1875. After that,
the wish for a yacht club was accomplished by creating the Detroit Yacht Club in
1878. That club lasted until 1882, at which time it too went out of
existence.

In 1884 the club of the year was the Michigan Yacht Club. Manning's
American Yacht List for 1891 shows the burgee above. This bred some new
life-support into the Detroit, though not enough to make it active enough to
consider it alive. However, when the Michigan went bankrupt in 1891, the
Detroit was alive enough to take over their club house and apparently even
managed to organise a regatta.

In 1896, the Yachts and Yachtsmen may no
longer have published, but Manning's of 1896 still doesn't include the
Detroit, but does list the Michigan. This is the version
listing the officers flags, where known. I wish I was able to list all those
stars and anchors, but as it is I have to include Manning's artwork.

The Michigan is not seen again after that, though,
while the Detroit flies the same burgee though the ages.
