Description of the flag

Before the Merchant Marine was created, the U.S. Maritime Service was formed in 1938. It trained the U.S. merchant mariners during World War II. It had a flag similar but slightly different flag than the U.S. Maritime Commission. The USMS was dissolved after operating from 1938-1954.
