Hayden Hardiman, now a 14-year-old sophomore of Purvis High School, had been
inspired by stories on the internet of residents designing flags for their
communities. He first presented a design to the Board of Alderman in May 2023.
After several changes were made, the final design was adopted on May 9, 2024.
The new flag was heavily inspired by the “Canadian Pale” vertical triband of the
flag of Mississippi adopted in 2021 and uses the gold and purple colors of
Purvis High school. At the center is a gold star on a red column that is meant
to represent Purvis’s WWII memorial. The city’s motto, “Friendly City in the
Pines” comes from the previous flag. Purvis Mayor Roger Herrin, who believes
this is the city’s third flag, said that Hardiman “is obviously very smart with
this kind of stuff, and it’s great that he wanted to participate in something
for the city.”
