General Dynamics Corporation traces its origins to John Philip Holland's
Holland Torpedo Boat Company. In 1899, Isaac Rice bought the company from
Holland and renamed it Electric Boat Company on February 7, 1899.
Since then,
the company was named Submarine Boat Corporation, acquired Canadair, sold that
back
to the Canadian government, but was reorganized as General Dynamics
in 1952. Subsequently it merged with Material Service Corporation, acquired
Chrysler Defense from Chrysler, sold its Data Systems Division, sold Cessna,
sold the Space division and the remaining Convair Aircraft Structure unit, and
acquired many other companies.
