It is a typical Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a field quartered ot purple and yellow.

Shield Or divided per pall Argent fimbriated Sable, in base a pine eradicated Vert fruited Gules at both sides of the pall. Mural crown Argent with four visible towers (town rank) and white scroll with inscription in black initials:"VILA DE PINHAL NOVO". 
Meaning:
The pines are canting elements, and the pall probably is symbolising an important railway junction in the commune.

Shield Or, a railway treck proper surrounding a pine tree proper by a sharp bend. Mural crown Argent with four visible towers (town rank) and white scroll with inscription in black initials:"VILA DE PINHAL NOVO".
Meaning:
The pine is a canting element. The treck is symbolising an important railway junction in the commune.
