It is a quite typical portuguese municipal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a field gyronny (city rank) of yellow and purple.

The coat of arms is Argent, a pear tree Proper fruited Or between two grapes, fruited purple; in chief azure an annulet Or with a ruby between two fleurs-de-lis Or. Mural crown Argent with five visible towers (city rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "CIDADE DE CANTANHEDE".

Cantanhede was uprgraded to  city and seat of a municipality on 16 August 1991. Flag and arms were adopted and published in Diário da República: III Série on 14 February 1992.

Cantanhede municipality had 37 000 inhabitants in 1990, and it is divided in 14 communes, covering 397 km². It belongs to the Coimbra District and to the old province of Beira Litoral.
