Toyota was originally known as Koromo, the sole distribution center for silk 
works in the Mikawa region from the Taisho era though the early 20th century. In 
1930, the silk industry began to decline and in 1934, Koromo began seeking investments 
in the automobile industry. In 1959, the name was changed to Toyota. The city is 
located in Chubu District.

The city emblem was adopted on Nov 22nd 1951 by Notice No 66 and the flag was 
adopted on Feb 27th 1970 by Notice No 11. The white flag has a blue city emblem 
in the center. The city emblem is a stylized kanji 衣 koromo = clothe as the city 
was once called a home of clothe in a form of water caltrops former Koromo 
Domain lord Naito family crest. The flag proportin is 2:3.

The flag of the former town of Asuke was white with mark. The town is now, 
from 2005, part of the city of Toyota.
