The Summits of the Americas (SOA) is a series of international summit
meetings bringing together the leaders of countries in North America, Central
America, South America and the Caribbean; however, no representative from Cuba
has participated. The meetings provide an opportunity for discussions about a
variety of issues and topics.
The summits have been organized by a number of multilateral bodies led by the
Organization of American States
In the early 1990s, what were formerly ad hoc summits came to be
institutionalized into a regular "Summit of the Americas" based on the
principles of democracy and free trade, specifically leading towards the formal
establishment of the FTAA (Free Trade Area of the Americas, which never came
into force), which sparked many debates on economic free trade, multilateral
relations, among other issues, and several protests took place not only during
actual summits but also it created the atmosphere to create parallel
organizations in the American hemisphere such as ALBA,
UNASUR, among others.

was shown displaying several flags of the VI Summit of the Americas. The Summit
is officially scheduled to take place on April 14-15, 2012. However, there are
additional events related to the Summit that have been taking place since April

the official website): "The hummingbird is native of the Americas. found from
Alaska to Tierra del Fuego, it represents the vision of unity across the
continent. The wide range of colors represents the diversity of the Americas".
