The Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve was commonly referred to as the 'Wavy Navy' because its gold stripes were wavy rather than straight (as in the Royal Navy) or crosshatched (as in the Royal Naval Reserve - usually former Merchant Marine officers, or Merchant Navy in British parlance. The wavy stripes are reflected in the design of the RNVRYC burgee, which would be instantly recognizable to anyone who had served in British or Commonwealth naval forces during World War II.

I am interested in the background to the blue ensign warrant for the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve Yacht Club. I have been unable to find anything relevant at www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/:

1947 - the sailing club was established
1957 - became entitled to wear the blue ensign
The plain Blue Ensign. Clubs enjoying the plain Blue Ensign privilege are senior to those enjoying the privilege of a defaced Blue Ensign or a defaced Red Ensign. A decision was made in 1924 that there would be no further authorisations of the privilege of the plain Blue Ensign. However, subsequent exceptions to this general rule have been made in respect of the RNVR Sailing Club (1957), the Royal Marines Sailing Club (1965) and the Royal Naval Sailing Association (1986). I think that the date of the Royal Naval Sailing Association ensign should be 1935 or 1936. The Association appeared in the Navy List in 1936. Plain Blue Ensigns have also been authorised for the Royal Victorian Motor Yacht Club, Melbourne, in 2007, and Hornet Services Sailing Club, Gosport, in 2014.
