On 1 January 2022, the new municipality of Böztal was created by merging the municipalities of Bözen, Effingen, Elfingen and Hornussen (see below).

"The cross is derived from the arms of Hungary, as the village was a possession of the Königsfelden Abbey, which was founded by Queen Agnes of Hungary."
