Simon Beaudrys (b. 1977) is a graphic artist living and working in Montréal.
In 2007, he established with the writer Philippe Jean Poirier the collective "Identité
Québecoise". Artistic director at the advertizing agency Dentsubos for 13 years,
Beaudrys resigned in 2015 to become a full-time artist.
Câliboire, his
first exhibition, was inaugurated in 2011 and presented since them in several
towns of Québec (Chicoutimi, Matane, Montréal, Amos, Val d'Or, Québec).
Câliboire is made of 15 works questioning the concept of national identity. Part
of the exhibition, the Monolys flag exists both in the cloth (90 cm x 60 cm,
hoisted in the center of the exhibition room or on a wall) and as a video
installation (resolution, 720 x 480; 0:05).
The Monolys flag is presented
as a proposal for a new flag of Québec. Its main rationale is the unification of
the four parts of the current flag, which are separated. The fleur-de-lis, as
the symbol of the Québec nation, is increased in size and affirmation, disposing
of the image of the Roman Catholic religion symbolized by the white cross.

Originally designed in 2008, the flag was
introduced in "Essai graphique sur le drapeau québecois", an article published
by Beaudrys and Poirier in "Le Devoir", 22 January 2008.
