The municipality of Segredo (7,158 inhabitants in 2010; 24,774 ha) is located
250 km north-west of Porto Alegre. The municipality is composed of the districts
of Segredo (seat), Bela Vista, Vila Tamanduá and Serrinha Velha.
Segredo
[Secret] is named for the assassination of Abel Batista da Silva, a landowner
married with Maria Francisco da Silva, who was killed in February 1881 by his
employee Salvador Carvalho and a slave named Benjamin. The murderers threw the
body down to the neighboring stream; days later, fishers recovered a body from
the stream, which was not formally identified. The crime's mobile was never
elucidated, maybe a romance between Maria Francisca and Salvador.
The
district of Segredo was established within Sobradinho by Municipal Law No. 10
promulgated on 1 June 1956. The municipality of Segredo was established by
Municipal Law No. 9,002 promulgated on 11 January 1990, separating from
Sobradinho and Soledade.
