The municipality of São José do Hortêncio (4,201 inhabitants in 2012; 6,369 
ha) is located 70 km of Porto Alegre.
São José do Hortêncio is named for 
its patron saint, St. Joseph, and Hortêncio Leite, who owned plots located on 
the road of access to the municipality. The town was first settled in 1826, as 
an "old colony", by German immigrants.
The municipality of São José do 
Hortêncio was established by State Law No. 8,576 promulgated on 29 April 1988.

The flag and arms of São José do Hortêncio are prescribed by Municipal Law 
No. 124 promulgated on 24 April 1991.
The symbols are not described in the 
Law but in the [unavailable] Appendices.
