The municipality of São Jorge (2,144 inhabitants in 2016; 11,805 ha) is
located 230 km north of Porto Alegre.
São Jorge was established in 1930,
as Ponte de Guabiju by Pedro Nunes da Silva, who lived in Canhada Bonita; he
offered a plot to his friend, Father Felix Busattta, to erect a church that was
consecrated on 13 August 1939 and dedicated to St. George.
The municipality
of São Jorge was established by State Law No. 8,427 promulgated on 30 November
1987, separating from Nova Prata, and inaugurated on 1 January 1989.
