The municipality of Palmeiras das Missões (35,045 inhabitants in 2014; 14,194
ha) is located 370 km of Porto Alegre.
Palmeiras das Missões was first
settled in 1724. Mate harvesters renamed the town to Vilinha in 1824, a name
subsequently changed to Vilinha do Herval, Vilinha da Palmeira, Santo Antônio de
Palmeira, and, eventually, Palmeira das Missões.

The flag of Palmeiras das Missões is prescribed by Municipal
Law No. 902 promulgated on 5 September 1973.

A white
rectangle with a green stripe from one end to the other, charged in the center
with a green palm tree.
