The municipality of Não-Me-Toque (17,185 inhabitants in 2017; 36,170 ha) is
located 300 km north-west of Porto Alegre.
Não-Me-Toque is the cradle of
Dutch immigration to Rio Grande do Sul; the first colonists settled there in
1949, when Vila de Não-Me-Toque formed the 2nd district of the municipality of
Carazinho.
The municipality of Não-Me-Toque was established by State Law No.
2,555 promulgated on 18 December 1954.
On 9 December 1971, the
municipality was renamed to Campo Real (Royal Field), as a tribute to wheat, the
municipality's main crop. A plebiscite prescribed by State Law No. 6,601
promulgated on 27 September 1973 prompted the restoration of the municipality's
original name on 27 December 1976.
A pioneer project of digital
agriculture, called Aquarius, was initiated in the 2000s by several private
partners and the Federal University of Santa Maria; the project was taken over
in 2005 by the Cotrijal cooperative and different municipalities. Não-Me-Toque
was granted the title of National Capital of Digital Agriculture by Federal Law
No. 12,081 promulgated on 29 October 2009.
The origin of the odd name of
the municipality, lit. Touch-Me-Not, is disputed. The spiny shrub
Dasyphyllum spinescens (Lessing) Cabrera, locally known as St. Anthony's
Thorn or Touch-Me-Not, could have grown profusely in the area. Fazenda Não-Me-Toque
is listed on a public document issued in Passo Fundo on 20 July 1885.
