The municipality of Lagoa Vermelha (27,807 inhabitants in 2019; 12,634 ha) is
located 250 km north-east of Porto Alegre. The municipality is composed of the
districts of Lagoa Vermelha (seat), Boqueirão, Tupinamba, Fátima, Campinas,
Capão do Cedro, Santa Luzia and Clemente Argolo.
Lagoa Vermelha was
established on 25 January 1845, as São Paulo de Lagoa Vermelha. The founder,
José Ferreira Bueno, was a captain of the National Guard who owned a fazenda in
Lapa (Paraná). The municipality of Lagoa Vermelha was established by Provincial
Law No. 1,018 promulgated on 12 April 1876, then covering all north-eastern Rio
Grande do Sul, Vacaria included, and inaugurated on 18 January 1877. The
municipality of Vacaria was established on 1 April 1878, Lagoa Vermelha being
downgraded to its 3rd district. The municipality of Lagoa Vermelha was
re-established by Law No. 1,309 promulgated on 10 May 1881, and inaugurated on
26 January 1883.
Lagoa Vermelha (Red Lake) was named for the a small lake
whose red color has been a matter of legends. The local tradition reports that a
caravan of Jesuits transporting gold and sacred artifacts was chased by bandits.
About to be caught, the Jesuits sent the mules laden with the treasures to the
lake, where they all drowned. Gold buried in the lake caused the water color to
turn to yellowish red, which has never changed since then. Neither changes the
volume of the lake, even during rain or drought periods. This never changing
condition indicates that the lake is sacred and inviolable. Would someone
desecrate the lake, the rivers would dry up and the region turned into a desert.
No one should bath or fish in the lake, which is allegedly bottomless.
