The municipality of Independência (6,167 inhabitants in 2019; 35,829 ha) is
located 480 km north-west of Porto Alegre.
Independância is said to have
been named by rascals banished from Santo Ângelo in 1890 and expelled beyond
river Santa Rosa, where they morphed in careful farmers and hunters. One of
them, wanting to settle back to Santo Ângelo with his family, said to the local
authorities: "I want to come back because I have gained my independence." There
is absolutely not the least evidence of these events; why the town was called
"Independence" is still a matter of conjecture.
