The municipality of Anta Gorda (6,216 inhabitants in 2017; 24,296 ha) is
located 200 km of Porto Alegre. The municipality is composed of the districts of
Anta Gorda (seat) and Itapuca.
Anta Gorda was established in 1904 by
Italian colonists. As recalled by the monument erected on the town central's
square, the town was named for a fat tapir one killed by hunters in the
neighborhood. The size of the game impressed people, who recalled the place as
"where they killed the fat tapir". In 1910, when Anta Gorda was made the 4th
district of the municipality of Lajeado, its name was changed to Carlos Barbosa;
due to the reluctance of the inhabitants to use the new name, Anta Gorda was
offiically re-established two years later.
Anta Gorda was transferred in
1915 to the newly established municipality of Encantado, as its 2nd district. At
the time, Anta Gorda counted 5,558 inhabitants and Itapuca 3,322. The
establihsment in 1920 of the district of Putinga significantly decreased the
territory and population of Anta Gorda.
Anta Gorda was the seat of the
municipality of Encantado until 1936, while the district of Itapuca was
transferred to Ilópolis from 1938 to 1950. In 1959, the establishment of the
district of Dr. Ricardo decreased even more Anta Gorda's territory.
On 8
December 1963, 1,209 out of the 1,453 voters (83 %) approved the municipal
emancipation of Anta Gorda. The first municipal elections were held on 29 March
1964.

The flag of Anta Gorda was created on 10 October 1975.
The
white stripe is a symbol of peace and honesty. The green lateral stripes
represent forests and the town's aspiration to development.
The charges of
the coat of arms refer to agriculture, pecan nut, fecundity, and moral and civic
resistance.
