Ivan Sache, 5 February 2022 The municipality of Missal (10,474 inhabitants in 2010; 31,951 ha) is located
on the border with Paraguay (here, Lake Itaipu), 620 km west of Curitiba.
Missal was settled in 1961-1962, mostly by 2nd-generation German colonists
led by Father José Backes, the founder of the Sipal Colonizadora company. The
early colonists mostly lived from timber extraction. The name of the new
settlement (lit., [Roman] Missal] was chosen to highlight the religious
background of its foundation; at the time, 98% of the inhabitants were of Roman
Catholic religion. The Roman Missal is the liturgical book that contains all the
texts used in the mass for one year; its use has been mandatory since a Decree
issued by Pope Pius V in 1570.
The municipality of Missal was established by
State Law No. 7,566 promulgated 30 December 1981, separating from Medianeira,
and inaugurated on 1 December 1983.

The flag and arms of Missal are prescribed by Municipal
Law No. 4 promulgated on 6 September 1983.
Article 3.

municipality of Missal was designed by 1st grade student Claudia Klaic at the
Cenecista School of Missal.
Article 4.
The municipal flag of Missal
shall be rectangular, divided by four equal, plant green parallelograms opposed
two by two, four dark red diagonal stripes, four successive, blue right-angled
triangles, whose successive hypotenuses form a white lozenge inscribing an open
book with a scroll inscribed 'MISSAL-PR". The book and the scroll are
characteristic of the book of the Holy Mass at the origin of the name of the
municipality.
Article 5.

municipal flag shall have the official dimensions prescribed for the national
flag, 14 units in width on 20 units in length as a rectangle. Each of the parts
will be considered a measure or module.
Article 6.
The heraldic
meaning of the parts and colors of the municipal flag is the following.
a)
The parallelograms' plant green recalls greening field and hope of profuse
harvests.
b) The dark red diagonal stripes symbolizes the generous and
fertile soil, mirrored in all the parts of the territory.
c) The right-angled
triangles' blue is the symbolic representation of the color of the sky in spring
morning and of the rivers and lake Itaipu that water the territory of the
municipality.
d) The central lozenge represents the municipality's territory
and population. White particularly symbolizes the spirit of peace and friendship
reigning in the heart of the inhabitants of Missal.
e) The open book
symbolizes municipal health, while the scroll highlights the municipal power
guiding the destiny of the population.
