The municipality of Nossa Senhora do Livramento (20,592 inhabitants in 2010;
5,193 sq. km) is located in south central Mato Grosso, 30 km of Cuiabá.
Nossa Senhora do Livramento is one of the oldest municipalities in Mato
Grosso. Unfortunately, most historical records disappeared in 1930 when
Armônio de Moraes burned the municipal archives "to start a new era". The
first settlement in the municipality, Cocais, was established during the 18th
century gold rush by Antonio Aires and Damião Rodrigues. In the beginning
of the 19th century, a statue of Our Lady of the Deliverance was shipped from
Portugal and then transported to Vila Bela, the old capital of Mato Grosso.
When crossing the village of São José dos Cocais, the donkey carrying the
statue refused to move ahead, which was, as usual, interpreted as a wish of
the Virgin to have a chapel built there. The saint indeed "selected" a
strategic place where people and troops traveling between the Cuiabá gold
mines and Vila Bela would stop and rest. Francisco João Botelho and his wife
Escolástica de Campos Rondon found there a small post, around which a
settlement developed. Established by Provincial Law of 21 August 1835, the
district of Nossa Senhora do Livramento was made a municipality in 1883.
The flag shown on the municipal website differs from the one shown on
Wikipedia. The central stripe is broader than the outer ones and the lozenge
charged with the municipal arms is more compact.
