The municipality of Resplendor (17,606 inhabitants in 2009; 1,072 sq. km) is
located in eastern Minas Gerais. Resplendor developed around the railway station
of the same name: on 17 December 1938, Law No. 148 erected Resplendor as a
municipality, separated from the mother municipality of Aimorés. The name of the
place ("Shining") alludes to a stone that profusely reflected the sun light.
There are indeed several gem mines in the region; in the 1950, a Resplendor mine
yielded aquamarines of a hitherto unknown colour, named "Martha Rocha" for the
first Miss Brazil (1954).
The flag of Resplendor is vertically divided
red-white-green with the municipal coat of arms in the middle. The coat of arms
of Resplendor is made of a rounded-off rectangular shield, surmounted by a
golden mural crown showing three towers and two half-towers, and surmounting a
red scroll charged with the black writing "AD SUMMA PER ARDUA" (in Latin, "to
the top through difficulties"). The shield shows a landscape, made of green
meadows flanking a white river (Rio Doce); in the background blue mountains
under a lighter blue sky lit by a 16-pointed sun. Left of the river, a
non-identified plant panicle (rice?), right of the river, a corn ear.

flags of Brazil and Minas Gerais. The flags' staffs are coloured according to
the main colours of the flag:
- red-green for Resplendor;
- green-yellow
for Brazil;
- white-red for Minas Gerais
