Monash City Council is situated in the mid-eastern suburbs of
metropolitan Melbourne.
Monash City Municipality was established on the
14 December 1994, following the forced amalgamations of all the former City of
Waverley and most of the former City of Oakleigh. This new municipality covered
all of the original Shire of Oakleigh / Shire of Mulgrave and the breakaway
Borough / Town of Oakleigh.

During my researching I did find the unofficial Shire of Mulgrave
Coat-of-Arms, which like those used by Oakleigh, are based upon the Australian
Federation Coat-of-Arms. The earliest known use, known to me so far, is February
1954. Images above show the arms in black and white and as used on the mayor's
chain.

On the 14 March 1995, exactly 3 months after the new municipality,
the State Government appointed Commissioners decided upon a logo design created
by a Melbourne based commercial design company. This stylised "M" design was
based upon part of the front wall and roof drainage of the former Waverley, now
Monash Council Offices.

The flag for Monash City is simply the stylised
"M" in white on a medium blue field, with proportions of 1:2. This design and
flag continues to this day, although the flag is, unfortunately, rarely seen or
used. I have on several occasions suggested to the Council Staff and Councilors
that it be used or at least displayed on the Council Chamber. This is still to
occur.

For a short period of time in May 2010, a vertical variation of
the Monash City Flag was displayed. From a visual perspective this did not work
very well, as the Council logo was barely recognisable and the Council's name
text was difficult to read.
