Makhado Local Municipality is located in the Vhembe District in Limpopo Province of South Africa and comprises the former local authority of Louis Trichardt and surrounding rural areas. The municipal flag is a heraldic banner of the arms notified for registration with the South African Bureau of Heraldry on 19 December 2003.

The flag comprises three horizontal bands of blue, white and blue, the central
band being divided into two thinner wavy stripes and three white wavy stripes.
The main charge from the shield of the arms is placed in the centre of the flag.
The wavy white and blue lines allude to the importance of rivers and dams which
sustain life and development. In the central circle appears a green mountain
which is charged with an indigenous pot. The mountain relates to nature (and the
Soutspansberg range in particular) and natural heritage of the area while the
pot alludes to the importance of the heritage of the local inhabitants. The sun
behind the mountain symbolizes a new beginning or hope for the future.
Surrounding this emblem are two ox-horns which relates to farming and the
importance of cattle farming for the region’s inhabitants.
