About Annandale

Annandale is an unincorporated area in Fairfax County, generally between Alexandria and Fairfax City. A history of the area is located at It is home of the Annandale campus of the Northern Virginia Community College.

Description of the Flag

A blue flag with three converging white diagonal lines, overlain by a large dark red oval, white inside, bearing a blue deciduous tree with a red bird.

The website at reports a new flag for Annandale. It uses Pantones 300 blue and 193 red. I'm reasonably sure October 5 will be Annandale Flag Day from now on.
Peter Orenski, 5 October 2006

The emblem of the bird (a cardinal, the Virginia state bird) in a tree has been used as the Annandale logo for years, appearing on road signs marking the boundaries of the village (or whatever it would be termed). The pattern of stripes would seem to represent the two main roads that converge at Annandale, Little River Turnpike (the more or less horizontal one) and Columbia Pike (coming in from the northeast).
Joe McMillan, 7 October 2006

Joe is precisely correct about the roads. We looked at some options that showed all 5 of the major roads that converge in Annandale (the others are Ravensworth Road, Annandale Road and Backlick Road). It gave an interesting "rising sun" effect. I'm not sure why the board voted against that one. Possibly they felt that the other 3 roads lacked the historical cachet, or maybe that they just made the flag too busy. Or, maybe it looked too much like the Japanese naval ensign. I'm eventually going to write a design history of the flag for posting on, which will include some of the "might have been" alternative designs.
